Everybody needs to run away from home at least once. Susan Corbett told people she was out to save the world, but really she was running--running from her home as much as to anywhere. Like many women, she was searching for meaning to her life or for a good man to share it with. In Africa, she hoped to find both.

Compelling and compassionate, In the Belly of the Elephant is Susan's transformative story of what happens when you decide to try to achieve world peace while searching for a good man. More than a fish-out-of-water story, it's a surprising and heart-rending account of her time in Africa trying to change the world as she battles heat, sandstorms, drought, riots, intestinal bugs, burnout, love affairs and more than one meeting with death. Against a backdrop of vivid beauty and culture, in a narrative interwoven with a rich tapestry of African myths and fables, Susan learns the true simplicity of life, and discovers people full of kindness, wisdom and resilience, and shares with us lessons we, too, can learn from her experiences.

While appreciate the attempts at helping other nations I do not like this book. Yes she is a dreamer but for the life of me I can not understand how a young white woman can be so arrogant in thinking that she can do more for the black countries than they can do for themselves. This is the absolute most raceist a person can be. The benevolent while young privileged woman tending to the poor blacks is just racist.. Sad but true.

In the Belly of the Elephant A Memoir of Africa eBook Susan Corbett Reviews

This was such an entertaining book that totally kept my attention. I loved reading the real life adventures that the author endured. And I loved the way African legend was intertwined throughout the story.
The author seamlessly weaves the landscape of her own psyche with her interpersonal and geographic travels in what was then Upper Volta. Surprisingly, this was a true page-turner, and poetic at times.

Although it is one very reflective woman's journey, it answered a long-held question of mine what motivates people to abandon privilege and comfort to live in such challenging and depriving parts of the world.
Gives insight into the struggles the people of Africa face.
Susan masters the art of weaving her real life experiences with African myths. Her powerful descriptive imagery draws you into her tale; you are in Africa seeing and feeling all that Susan does. If you are interested in exploring a simpler lifestyle, travel, adventure, humanitarian work, other cultures, you'll find that in this book. It's the type of story that stays with you long after you've finished reading.
This book was so enjoyable to read and I found that I couldn't put it down. I would recommend this book to anyone. The author is an inspiraion to me.
Having traveled all my life, unfortunately didn't discover Africa till I was in my seventies. Went there 4 years in a row and absolutely fell in love. Now 82 and health prevent travel, so love to read wonderful books like this about a continent and people you get addicted to.

Honolulu Hi
I really enjoyed this book. It brought up issues that ranged from an individual's self discovery to an important lesson about discovering what is actually true about the world...something that is pretty undicoverable if one never leaves the cocoon of our mind lulling materialism in the USA.

Yes she is a dreamer but for the life of me I can not understand how a young white woman can be so arrogant in thinking that she can do more for the black countries than they can do for themselves.
