Welcome to the Gulch... funny things happen in the middle of nowhere.

Butterscotch Jones thought that living in the far north provided enough peril to contend with until a private plane crashed outside her hometown of McIntyre's Gulch, Manitoba, Canada. The treasure inside the plane soon attracted both the RCMP and the Russian Mafia. For a town built upon isolation and secrecy, the citizens faced very public exposure.

"A light, fun read with an eccentric cast of characters who bring the village of MacIntyre's Gulch to delightful life."

Butterscotch Jones is a young woman with secrets who moves to the back of beyond in Canada, to a town where almost everyone has red hair and lot of secrets of their own. Butterscotch and her wolf-dog find a plane filled with cash, jewels, bonds, and a dead pilot. A Mountie who has pissed of his boss gets sent to investigate.

This was a surprisingly good read. The characters are interesting and mostly likeable, the settings well-described (I felt like I was trying to navigate next to Butterscotch during a white out), and the plot interesting. I also enjoyed the relationship between Butterscotch and the Mountie, Chuck Goodhead. It was interesting to watch such a button-down, law-and-order kind of guy figure out how to navigate the less than sterling, close-knit community. Also, there was a nice spark of romance between Butterscotch and Chuck that could be promising for the series.

I read one review where the reviewer took offense at some incorrect geographical references. I get that, because I find it irritating when details about something I know are wrong, but since I am not that familiar with Canadian geography, I didn’t really care. And the settings were described with enough detail that I could envision what was going on. Also, I thought the author had a good grasp of office politics, and small-town living. I liked this book and will read more in the series.

Due North Butterscotch Jones Mysteries Book 1 edition by Melanie Jackson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I love this series. I read them all in just a few days. The setting and characters are unique and quirky. I love the way all of the town comes together to take care of their own. The red hair, the Gaelic, the "bears" - it's wonderful fun. I hope there are many more on the way.
Delightful little story about a whole town of kind of crazy characters whose resident finds a plane crash, a dead pilot and a whole bunch of money and other tasty objects. What the town decides to do with it all and the Mountie that comes to investigate it is very compelling. I loved the tongue in cheek wit and the people in the book are very sweet and even though all a bit crooked, delightful people.
I think I have read a number of books by this author but this one has a more unusual background. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the story. It is not exactly a mystery but the end left you hanging to see what happens next. I for one want to find out what that is.
This book takes place in a secluded town in Canada, McIntyre's Gulch, where everyone has red hair and there are only two last names Jones and McIntyre. This town is full of intriguing characters, including the main character, a young woman who has renamed herself Butterscotch after finding herself in troubled waters in the States. However, the seclusion of the town doesn't provide as much protection from the outside world at Butterscotch might have hoped when she accidentally finds a downed plane while walking her wold hybrid Max between major winter storms.

This grisly discovery is further complicated by the other items she finds in the plane and a town decision to contact the Mounties regarding the crash brings unexpected trouble as not only a Mountie shows up, but some rough looking members of the Russian Mob as well!

The story is quick moving and the characters are intriguing. I am looking forward to reading more about Butterscotch and will be reading the next novel in the series soon!
Too often cozy mysteries become thinly veiled replicas of over-used story lines. This book rose above that. I loved the Canadian setting. The author made it an integral part of the setting. I lived in remote ND for a few years. Her protagonist's obstacles were on the money. I highly recommend this book.
Butterscotch Jones lives in McIntyre's Gulch, Canada, where no one is really who they seem but since they all have secrets, they just let everyone be...until Jones and her wolf-dog come across a plane crash site, complete with duffel bags of loot and a dead body. The town considers not even reporting the crash to the next biggest town just so they can a)keep the treasure, and b) avoid the authorities...but the report it, and when the RCMP show up, the Russian mafia isn't far behind.
I always read the critical reviews of a novel before purchasing it, and, in this case, I have to say that those which mentioned that the characters weren't well-developed probably are correct. However, for such a light-hearted mystery, I don't think that criticism bears much weight. As to the individual who protested the depiction of her hometown, well, not ever having been to Manitoba, I can't argue with her assessment. (And while that reviewer may know for certain that there are no "glaciers" in the area, I assure her that in my own hometown we refer to the icy, hard snowpack that follows bad winter storms as "glaciers".) However, the fictional town placed in Manitoba by the author, with a cast full of quirky characters, was humorous and entertaining. I enjoyed the depiction of an inbred town full of redheads with similar last names, while the habit of giving nicknames to the characters reminded me with delight of one of my favorite movies, "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain." All in all, a lighthearted and enjoyable read.
