THE REBEL is a short story and prequel to Julianne MacLean's "Highlander" series. It takes place in Scotland during November of 1715 and has a quick scene at the end approximately five months later. I actually bought this years ago and just barely got around to reading it since I'm not a fan of short stories. It's about a Highland warrior (Alexander MacLean) and a beautiful Englishwoman (Elizabeth Curtis) who meet on the battlefield, on opposing sides of a war, and unexpectedly find their soul mate in the process...Elizabeth is a young woman who has lost everyone and is now alone in the world. She's brave and bold and though she was originally seeking vengeance, she discovers the healing power of love instead. Alexander was courageous, honorable, protective, and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Since their time together lasts only a few days the romance felt rushed and was hard for me to completely buy into, but was still sweet nonetheless. It's also a pretty clean read with kisses only, no sex or anything close to it.
In the end this story only took me about 30 minutes to finish and was too short for much character development. So while I liked both Alex and Elizabeth, they just weren't fleshed out enough for me to fall in love with. As a prequel it doesn't do a lot for the series either although there's a quick scene with Angus MacDonald, the villain turned hero of books 1-2. There was also a goof-up where Alex introduces the MacGregors then calls them the MacEwens. Overall it was neither bad nor great, but I do like the author's style.
Please Note: This story first appeared in THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF SCOTTISH ROMANCE, so if it sounds sort of familiar to you, then you might have already read it there.

The Rebel The Highlander Series Book 0 edition by Julianne MacLean Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a short story that introduces you to Alex who is a Scottish Highlander. Alex is fighting with other Highlanders against a group of Englishman. As he is resting as the Englishman are retreating, he is surprised by a lone "Englishman". Only after he knocks the Englishman out, does he discover that it is not a man but a woman. And so the story of Alex and Elizabeth begins. While this is short and sweet, Julianne MacLean manages to get you engaged with the characters and make you want to know more about them.
I enjoyed this short story (The Rebel), the story was only 63% of this e-book. The rest of the e-book was just the first few chapters of another book. "The Rebel" was a nice twist to the typical romance war stories. However, with a lot of short stories, I wished there was more or at least an epilogue since there was no continuation to this story. The story had romance and intrigue (no sex) and the female character had a strong backbone. It's worth reading if you subscribe to Unlimited. However, I don't think it's worth it if you have to pay individually for your e-stories.
Not a very long story with little in the way of real passion. But it was none the less a nice little story that would fill an hour or two and did not require a great deal of thought to read.
The rebel was Elizabeth an English lass and the hero Alexander a Highland Lord, whom she valiantly tries to kill during the battle of Argll. It was short and not really fleshed out. He saves her from the battle field, after she tries to kill him to avenge her brother and father.
It has a sweet and satisfying ending, although, I wish there had been more action, passion, and drama between the two. It was still a good read.
Recommend it as a filler or something to just pass time and mindlessly entertain, more fluff than romance.
This was a really quick read that I enjoyed a lot. Even though it is so short I was transported into the Highlands with Alex and Elizabeth. For the length of the book, they were written really well and felt like complete characters. The flow is very smooth and nothing pulls you out of the story. I wasn't ready for it to be over and would have loved more of Alex and Elizabeth. This was a great prequel to the series that does not leave you hanging but makes you want to go get the books. If you are looking for a great, short little story (easily read on a lunch break) give this a chance.
In 1715 Scotland was fighting against the English. Alexander a Scottish highlander has just finished fighting a battle, when he is confronted by a young English lad. He is about to kill him when he see how young and scared he is and tells him to run and get out of there. Instead of running he uses his bayonet to cut Alexanders leg. Now Alexander is pissed and he hits the young lad on the head, to knock him out. As soon as he does, he sees he has just hit a woman in disguise. He is mortified he has hit a woman. When Elizabeth wakes in a thatched roofed house she doesn't recognize, she knows she has to run. But every part of her body hurts. Elizabeth has lost her entire family. Her mother years before, her father and brother to the war. Now she wants revenge. Alexander quickly sees her for what she is, grieving her family and lost on what to do. He vows to take her to her last remaining relative, her uncle, to keep her safe. So he must protect her. Elizabeth puts her trust in the man she just tried to kill. He could have left her there to die or gave her to one of his country men to torcher, it is a war and instead he protects. On there journey they get to know each other and there is an attraction that neither want to talk about but neither can they deny.
The Rebel is a short prequel to the authors series on Highlanders. If her full length books are as good as the prequel, I would love to read them! The sexual tension is there. But no real scenes. But the attraction you feel between the 2 is awesome. I like this book because they talk of true events with fictional characters. Very good. I hope Julianne Maclean contacts me and would like more reviews. Would love to have more of these of the site! Adult situations but fine for 16 and up (this one anyway).
